Algeria Dates
Algeria is the 4th largest date producer in the world, with strong potential to become an important exporter to Europe. To meet an increasing demand, the sector must respond to consumers' sustainability concerns.
Climate change poses difficult challenges to agricultural sectors. So, it is important to increase the resilience and sustainability of Algeria's date sector. CBI's Algeria Dates project supports SMEs, farmers, stakeholders and service providers with climate-smart agricultural practices.
Project goals
This project focuses on making the Algerian dates sector future-proof. It is essential to address climate challenges and increase sustainability. Our goals are to:
- Install agricultural practices that are climate-resilient. This increases the sector's sustainability of date production;
- Diversify the sector, making it less reliant on the main Deglet Nour variety;
- Help Algerian SMEs get access to international markets. This will increase the dates' value.
- Ensure institutional and governmental support for sustainable date farming;
- Focus especially on farmers, youth, and women.
This will help the sector become competitive and sustainable.
Project activities
To achieve these goals, the project focuses on the following activities:
- Training sessions in sustainable practices by local and international experts. This helps SMEs, farmers, stakeholders and service providers build capacity;
- Developing best practices for climate adaptation. The focus is on water and soil management;
- Helping Algerian date exporters get access to European buyers;
- Supporting the Algerian government in creating a climate adaptation strategy for the sector;
- Promoting Algerian dates at international trade events (SIAL and Biofach);
- Making the value chain more traceable, sustainable, and inclusive;
- Supporting farmers with organic certification.
The project's inception phase started in 2024. CBI is still designing and confirming interventions together with key stakeholders, including exporters, farmers and policymakers. The implementation phase is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2025.
