Aquaculture (Peru)

This programme is a part of our integrated country programme for Peru. Our main goal is to help exporters of aquaculture products to do more business in Europe.

European demand for various aquaculture products is high. This is partly because the European fishery sector is not allowed to catch as much fish as it used to, for environmental reasons. In our research we found several Peruvian companies in the aquaculture segment that have a lot of export potential. They need support and assistance in getting ready for the European market.

The focus in this programme is on shrimps, trout and paiche. Paiche is a large, attractive looking freshwater fish native to the Amazon. Our goal is to promote it as an exotic fish. Shrimps are in high demand in Europe; the market for this species is not yet saturated, so there is room for more suppliers. The trout exported from Peru is a special variety cultivated in the highlands.

We want to help producers find good markets for these higher-value exports. This will give them more income and strengthen Peru’s economy.

On top of coaching and training individual companies, we are also working to strengthen Peru’s aquaculture sector as a whole.

Project details

This programme began in 2015 and will end in 2018. In 2015 we selected participating companies. Then we invited them to Europe to receive export marketing training.

They also visited European businesses and trade events: the Conxemar aquaculture trade fair in Spain, and Seafood Expo Global in Belgium. All of this has helped them to understand the European market better. Our experts also visit each company individually at its own location.

Export procedures are among the problems we are dealing with at sector level. Peru’s exporters have to go through long and difficult procedures before they can export. This is bad for business. We are working with the government and business support organisations to make these procedures quicker and easier.

Project participants and products

A total of 5 companies are taking part in this programme. Their products: shrimp, trout and paiche.
