Home Decoration and Textiles Indonesia, Bangladesh and Mongolia

This programme is aimed at helping home decoration and home textiles producers from Indonesia, Bangladesh and Mongolia to do more business in Europe. We are helping them find niche markets for special products. We are also working with them on getting higher volumes and margins.

Home decorations and home textiles usually involve a lot of manual labour. This means that growing exports can create a lot of jobs, especially in poorer rural areas. One of the challenges in this sector is that prices are low. This means exporters have to export a lot to make a good income.

In this programme we are helping producers in Indonesia, Bangladesh and Mongolia to find new ways of doing this. More exports and higher margins will create more jobs and strengthen the economies of these countries.

Project details

This programme began in 2013 and will end in 2017. In the first year, we selected and audited participating companies in all three countries. The purpose of the audits is to find out a company’s  strengths and weaknesses. After that, we began to give the companies training and coaching. We are also working with business support organisations to strengthen these sectors.

In each country we are focusing on country-specific niche products: rattan in Indonesia, jute in Bangladesh and wool and cashmere in Mongolia.

One way of getting more exports and higher prices for these products to create different kinds of products. Another is to make new designs. Diversification and design are two areas in which we are helping the companies. Wider collections and better designs mean more buyers.

All of the companies in this programme have already exhibited at European trade fairs: Ambiente and Heimtextil in Germany and Maison et Objet in France. These are important international trade fairs for this market. Many of our exhibitors have already started exporting.
