IT Services Ghana

Ghana has the potential to become a strong and reliable information technology (IT) outsourcing destination for international markets. A large part of Ghana's population speaks English and is computer-literate. Yet, there are challenges. There is a skills gap between young IT graduates and the labour market’s demand. Also, the IT sector in Ghana needs a systemic change to make it more inclusive for young graduates who enter the job market.

In 2023, the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI) started the IT Services Ghana project. It aims to develop youth employment opportunities and to grow IT services’ exports to the European Union (EU) market.

The project focuses on:

  • Attracting and retaining young IT professionals, women in particular;
  • Closing the skills gap between young IT professionals from Ghana and the demand in the labour market;
  • Enabling Ghanese IT companies to grow their business and offer more employment opportunities; and
  • Positioning Ghana as a reliable and strong IT outsourcing destination.

Project goals

This project is currently in the inception phase. The goals are amongst others:

  • For 6-8 frontrunner companies to take part in business export coaching activities
  • For frontrunner companies to develop the best human resource development (HRD) practices to share within the sector;
  • Carrying out a needs assessment about services for (potentially) exporting SMEs, which provides enough ground for further action;
  • Carrying out an in-depth analysis of the position of women employees and entrepreneurs and their obstacles and opportunities.
