CBI is looking for consultants to help promote decent work in Bangladesh's leather goods and bags sector. We are looking for experts who can provide:

  • Systems change support for sustainable leather ecosystem development;
  • Support in the areas of sustainable leather ecosystem development, business coaching and market development for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) exporting small leather goods and bags;
  • Local project implementation and coordination support.

About the project 

Our 5-year project aims to support SMEs in Bangladesh's small leather goods and bags sector to create more decent jobs for its workers. We will do this  by: 

  • Supporting SMEs to develop socially compliant business models, with a focus on  the challenges that female workers face;
  • Strengthening the sector's ecosystem to ensure businesses have access to the services, skills, and support needed to create decent jobs and grow sustainably;
  • Encouraging understanding and collaboration within the sector, to ensure its future resilience.

Role of the consultant

CBI is looking for 3 types of consultants. 

Systems change expert for sustainable leather ecosystem development

CBI is looking for an expert who will:

  • Study why the current leather ecosystem does not sufficiently support companies in accessing opportunities and services for social compliance and decent job creation;
  • Support public and private service providers in developing financially viable solutions. The consultant will first conduct a needs assessment among the SMEs;
  • Lead sector alignment initiatives to enhance Bangladesh's position and reputation in export markets through social compliance and branding, while promoting best practices for skills development; and
  • Work with institutional stakeholders to facilitate the sector's transition to social compliance, possibly by developing a code of conduct or specific guidelines.

Leather sector expert for sustainable leather ecosystem development, business coaching and market development

CBI is looking for an expert who will:

  • Guide SMEs towards social certification (BSCI/SEDEX) by:
    • implementing monitoring systems;
    • establishing worker representation mechanisms;
    • promoting gender-inclusive work practices.
  • Identify and work with key players in the leather ecosystem to support the shift towards a more socially compliant sector, by using best practices and scaling strategies;
  • Helping collect and share best practices via sector associations and other forums, encouraging adoption by other companies in the sector;
  • Offer coaching to SMEs while promoting a broader sector-wide shift towards social compliance and better job quality.

Expert in local project implementation and coordination

CBI is looking for an expert who will:

  • Coordinate project, stakeholder, and logistical activities to support the initiatives led by the other 2 project experts;
  • Work with sector stakeholders to ensure the project is smoothly implemented within the sector;
  • Ensure that all stakeholders stay motivated and engaged to achieve the intended systems change and project outcomes.
